About Dr. David J. Hoopes

Dr. Hoopes is a board-certified radiation oncologist who has served as Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at cCARE, 4S Ranch since 2014. His experience includes stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT/SABR), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), with a focus on lung, prostate, breast, gastrointestinal, head and neck, and central nervous system cancers. Since 2014, Dr. Hoopes as served as the Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at cCARE, 4S Ranch.

Before joining cCARE, Dr. Hoopes was chief of the U.S. Air Force’s largest radiation department. He was chosen as consultant to the Surgeon General for radiation oncology, where he oversaw the USAF’s radiation oncology care world-wide.

Dr. Hoopes received his B.A. at Brigham Young University and earned his M.D. from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed a radiation oncology residency at Indiana University School of Medicine and was selected to serve as chief resident. He is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

As a full professor at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), Dr. Hoopes has chaired the Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences (RMAS) quality committee for nearly a decade. His research interests have largest centered around radiation quality and safety, including service on two national committees that evaluate radiation incidents and provide accreditation to other cancer programs. Dr. Hoopes travels across the country performing site visits at other cancer centers to ensure that these programs meet recognized standards of quality and safety.

When Dr. Hoopes is not caring for his patients, he enjoys raising his four children with his wife, Megan. They love to spend time outdoors hiking, surfing every week at our wonderful San Diego and Baja breaks, rock climbing, and skiing. Dr. Hoopes also served two years as a missionary in the Canary Islands and speaks fluent Spanish. He always looks forward to meeting and providing care for Spanish-speaking patients and their families.

Above all, Dr. Hoopes professional life is centered on being a clinical oncologist, “It’s a deeply humbling privilege to be a part my patient’s lives, to educate, comfort, and heal, working together with them to see the sunrise tomorrow, next year, and beyond.”
