John Philip Schwerkoske, M.D. specializes in hematology and oncology, providing comprehensive care for patients with cancer and blood disorders. He is dedicated to delivering personalized, evidence-based treatment while helping patients access the latest advances in cancer care, including clinical trials and emerging therapies.

Dr. Schwerkoske joins cCARE after serving as a Hematologist and Oncologist with The Oncology Institute in San Diego, where he also helped develop and expand community-based clinical trial programs. Prior to this role, he practiced with City of Hope and Dignity Health, caring for patients in both academic and community oncology settings. He completed his Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at the University of California, Davis, following his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Schwerkoske earned his medical degree from Creighton University and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, Dr. Schwerkoske has extensive experience in clinical research and investigational therapies. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in the development and expansion of Phase I-III clinical trial programs, helping patients gain access to innovative treatments close to home. His research interests have included breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and targeted therapies, and he has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in oncology and biomedical science journals.

Dr. Schwerkoske is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the American College of Physicians. He has been recognized for his commitment to patient care, including receiving City of Hope’s Oncology Award for Outstanding Service and Patient Care.

When Dr. Schwerkoske is not caring for patients, he enjoys spending time with his family. An avid outdoorsman and runner, he has completed eight marathons, including the Boston Marathon twice. As a participant in the 2013 Boston Marathon, he survived the events surrounding the marathon bombing, an experience that reinforced his belief in resilience, determination, and hope in the face of life’s greatest challenges. He brings those same values to helping patients navigate their cancer journey. He also enjoys hiking, photography, travel, piano, and orchestral music.
